Cranes of many different types are the typical means of handling and transporting large and heavy elements in production. In our research on crane-based robotic systems, we work on enabling cranes as platforms for robotic operations, utilizing their large range and reach and their high load capacity. By extending cranes with various robotic systems and services, such combined systems allow for carrying out heavy-duty robotic operations with high flexibility and mobility. Challenges we address encompass control engineering and programming as well as sensors and actuators for crane-based robotic systems.
